In this session, you will learn actionable strategies for leveraging online reputation to drive enrollment, philanthropic revenue, and financial resilience. The presenters—senior university leaders, faculty, and an endowment manager—will share data-backed insights into reputation’s impact on tuition and philanthropy. You will explore collaborative management strategies for integrating reputation metrics with financial planning, fostering cross-functional support, and setting KPIs. This interactive session will include a scenario-based workshop where you will brainstorm reputation-focused strategies and get feedback from the presenters. 

Learning Objectives

  • Identify an area where an improved online reputation could directly support your institution’s enrollment or revenue goals.  
  • Outline the factors that impact online reputation and outline practical steps to leverage them in marketing and finance strategies.  
  • Find concrete investment channels that can enhance institutional reputation and directly support revenue goals.

Steps to Earn CPE Credit

You can only earn credit for attending the session live. CPE credit cannot be earned for watching the recordings.

To earn CPE credit, you will complete the following tasks under the Content tab, after the session has ended:

  1. Pass the CPE codeword quiz. Write down the codewords posted in the Zoom chat at random times throughout the session and complete the quiz at the end of the session. 
  2. Submit the CPE check-out code displayed at the end of the session. 
  3. Download your CPE certificate. 

You have until 5 pm Eastern Time on Wednesday, July 30, to complete these three steps or report technology issues with this site to online@nacubo.org.

As Assistant Vice President of Resource Planning, Joe is responsible for leading, developing and managing a strategic and comprehensive resource and budget planning program in support of the university’s mission, plans and goals. He works with senior leadership and with academic and administrative units across the university in areas of budget planning and implementation, financial analysis, and budget policies and systems. Joe has served as Senior Resource Analyst and as a Resource Analyst in the Office of Resource Planning from 2014-2018.  Prior to those roles, he served as Associate Director of Business Operations in the Division of Athletics from 2011-2014 and as Business Operations Staff Assistant from 2006-2011

Erin O'Brien

Erin K. O’Brien, PhD, is Chief Student Retention Officer at the University at Buffalo, leading a comprehensive student experience and retention strategy. Previously, she served as Interim Associate Vice Provost and Director of International Admission for UB, as well as Chief Enrollment and Marketing Officer for the UB School of Management. Prior to her shift to higher education, she worked for IBM, focused on delivering technology and services for global financial services clients. Her insights have appeared in media outlets such as Bloomberg Businessweek, the Boston Globe, and AACSB Biz Ed. Recognized with a SUNY Chancellor’s Award, she holds a PhD in Management, an MBA, and a Bachelor’s degree from the University at Buffalo, and an executive certificate from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business.

Cristian Tiu

Cristian Tiu, PhD is Chair and Associate Professor of Finance at the University at Buffalo School of Management. Additionally, Tiu is a member of the investment committee for the University at Buffalo Foundation, Inc. His research interests lie in empirical and theoretical investments. Specifically, he is interested in determinants of performance and asset allocation of nonstandard investors, such as hedge funds and university endowments, and how economic instability or market segmentation is reflected in the asset prices. Tiu also studies asset pricing disaster models and how economic instability or market segmentation is reflected in asset prices. He has been quoted by such national media as the Washington Post, USA Today and Bloomberg.
